We are excited to announce that Dr. Edmund Bertschinger, MIT Physics Chair, will be visiting the Twin Cities on September 25th to give a talk entitled “Dark Energy: The Greatest Mystery in the Universe.”
By studying distant galaxies, supernovae, and cosmic radiation, astrophysicists have discovered a bizarre anti-gravity effect. Something has taken over the cellular machinery of space, forcing it to grow without limit. Perhaps a bizarre substance dubbed dark energy is responsible, or perhaps we fail to understand how gravity works. What is the evidence for this cancer in space? How might it operate? How can we find out? Dr. Bertschinger is a Professor of Physics, former Division Head of Astrophysics, and as of January 2008, Department Head of Physics at MIT. He is also a member of the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. A theoretical astrophysicist whose research interests focus on cosmology and relativistic astrophysics, Professor Bertschinger is passionate about education and sharing his research into the mind-boggling frontiers of the cosmos. MIT Club Tour of NOAA, Chanhassen, MN
DATE: Thursday, October 2, 2008 TIME: 4:00 PM - 6:30 PM PLACE: NOAA Weather Service Office 1733 Lake Drive W. Chanhassen MN, 55317 Tour the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office & North Central River Forecast Center HIGHLIGHTS: A tour of the combined NOAA facility is from 4 to 6 PM. There will be 30 minutes spent touring each of the three offices listed above. The remaining time between 5:30 and 6:00 PM will be used to show preparations for launching a weather balloon and for viewing outside weather instruments. The weather balloon will be released between 6 and 6:15 PM and all tour participants are welcome to stay for this launch. This tour time is an attempt to match schedules of those bringing teens and younger ones from schools. We will see and hear: 1) Todd Krause, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Weather Forecast Office talking about tornado paths, correlating tornado damage after the event with the meteorological observation during the event. 2) National Weather Service Forecast Office: Various methods of long term weather prediction. 3) Steve Buan, Service Coordination Hydrologist, North Central River Forecast Center: Flood prediction, including snow cover measurements using air fly-overs, melt rate and river channel flows. Join the MIT Club of MN during the last week of the Science Museum's Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination on Wed. Aug 20!
Where else can you see real Star Wars artifacts, design robots, levitate (magnetically), experience light speed in the Millennium Falcon, and learn about biomedicine? This is the opportunity of a lifetime... and of the future! The Science Museum's Star Wars exhibit runs only until August 24, so come experience the magic while it is here. Your ticket with the MIT Club of MN for Wed Aug 20 includes: * 6pm Omni Showing of "Special Effects" * 7pm tour time of Star Wars exhibit - you may remain in the exhibit as long as you wish, until closing (11:30pm) * General exhibit admission until closing (11:30pm) In addition, you may choose to ride the Millennium Falcon ($3 cash in the exhibit area), purchase items at the special gift shop, or take a memorable in-character photo. We are organizing a group outing to partake in a guided presentation of the St Paul Regional Water System. See where the water you use daily may come from! The tour includes viewing filter floors, the new activated carbon filter, clarifiers, flocculators, chlorinators, fluorinators, pumps and laboratory areas for testing water. MIT Enterprise Forum: Innovation To Commercialization: Using Government Funding to Kick Start Your Start-Up Dear MIT Alumni, The MIT Club of MN is pleased to present the latest MIT Enterprise Forum Global Broadcast: Innovation to Commercialization: Using Government Funding to Kick Start Your Start-Up. The broadcast will examine whether it is really possible to turn a $100,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant into $150,000,000 in private investment funding. A panel of experts will discuss how A123Systems, and two other companies, used their SBIR grants to go from "great idea" to "great product". Topics will include: **The entrepreneurial success stories of SBIR grant recipients. **What government agencies, like the NSF, DoD and NIH, look for when awarding SBIR grants and how they manage the different SBIR phases. **The crucial steps to take and missteps to avoid through the entire funding cycle. The panel presentation, produced by the MIT Enterprise Forum, will be webcast from Cambridge to multiple viewing sites around the world. A View of The Bridge, the I-35 W Bridge Construction Dear MIT Alumni, The MIT Alumni Club of Minnesota is happy to announce a unique and exciting opportunity for our alumni and their friends and family. We are organizing a group outing to partake in an exclusive guided presentation of the I-35W Bridge construction site. It’s an event that should offer something for everyone: scientists, engineers, architects, city planners, and just the generally curious will be able to take something from this inside look at one of the most publicized construction projects in Minnesota history. The materials of construction, aesthetics of design, the advanced monitoring systems, the construction noise countermeasures are all unique to this project and part of the discussion. Peter Sanderson, Project Engineer for Flatiron-Manson, will lead the presentation so come prepared with your technical questions. Alumni, family, and friends are all welcome, and don’t forget to bring the kids (they love the big earth movers). The MIT Club Family Science Saturday at The Bakken
SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 2008 Gather up the family and join the MIT Club of Minnesota at The Bakken Museum (www.thebakken.org/). Groups will be taken on a guided tour lasting 60 to 80 minutes. Tours include the special displays “Electrifying Minnesota” and “Fairy, Goddess, Wizard, Genie? Imagining Electricity”, in addition to permanent exhibits such as the first wearable pacemaker, “Electricity is Life” shocker machine and a working theremin. You’ll also see many galleries including “The Electrarium”, and “Magnetism and the Human Body”. Don’t miss the multi-media immersion into Victor Frankenstein's laboratory and Mary Shelley's study. Immediately after the tours please gather in the Franklin Room for light refreshments and an address by Dr. David Rhees, Director of the Museum. Be sure to ask him about notable figures in the electrical medical device field and special activities of the Museum. A special selection of rare books from the Bakken library will be available for viewing as well. Families with children can participate in the “Science Saturday” projects (included in admission fee). Please see below for a list of activities. After the tours and presentations you may enjoy the Museum until closing. Several MIT Club members will be going out for lunch after the tour. On Wednesday, March 12th, the MIT Club of MN is presenting a webcast and reception at the offices of Gray Plant Mooty from 5:30 until 8 pm featuring a discussion on Virtual Communities. The broadcast, second in the "It's a Small World" series will examine “How Virtual Communities Are Changing the Ways We Relate.”
A panel of three MIT faculty members will focus on various aspects of virtual communities and the ways in which MIT is contributing to this exciting arena. Whether you are just learning about virtual communities or spend most of your life in cyber space, you won't want to miss out on this program! The broadcast will not only highlight MIT expertise, but is also a great opportunity to socialize and network informally with other local alumni while catching up on what is going on at MIT. The reception begins at 5:30 pm: the broadcast starts at 6:30 pm. Cost is $5 ea. for club member(s) and their guest(s), $10 for non-member alumni, and $15 for others. Speakers Henry Jenkins, Director of the MIT Comparative Media Studies Program and the Peter de Florez Professor of Humanities "What Kind of World Would You Make: Second Life as Thought Experiment" Second Life and other virtual worlds represent a powerful demonstration of "Participatory Culture". From the start, it was marketed as a world which would be created through the collective contributions of its users. And because users come with many different motives and from many different kinds of settings, Second Life represents a hybrid media environment, one where commercial, nonprofit, governmental, educational, subcultural, and amateur contributors seek to reshape the world in their own images. Each of these groups are deploying Second Life as the site for thought experiments which allow them to rethink their real world institutions and practices. The MIT Club of Minnesota invites you to bring your kids to a "hands-on, minds-on" engineering experience at The Works! Perfect family fun for kids ages 4 to 104.
October 20th, 2007 12:30 - 3:30 P.M. The Works, Edina Community Center 5701 Normandale Road Edina, Minnesota, 55424 (952) 848-4848 www.theworks.org Come enjoy pizza & drinks with your fellow MIT families (from 12:30 to 1:30) then you play with fascinating hands-on displays and games! Tour the exhibit hall (be sure to touch all the exhibits!). *** Build the strongest pasta bridge! *** ...and WIN a FREE Seagate FreeAgent Go 120G Portable Storage Solution (worth $119). *Future* engineers only, please...all you Course 1 grads don't get to compete! Build huge castles and arches with foam blocks! Build and race your own racecars... see if you can beat your friends! All this for only $8.00 per person, paid at the door.
